EMPLOYMENT PROCESS


   Once per year the Elizabethton Fire Department conducts a thorough testing process in order to establish an active hire roster, whether a position is available at the time or not. This process begins by turning in a job application to the City Human Resources Office, and then taking a written examination, which is administered by Chief Carrier. All applicants who score a 70% or higher on the written exam will continue on to a physical agility test, which will be supervised by Deputy Chief Edwards. The physical agility test consists of a 1 mile timed run, a timed drill in full turn-out gear and airpack w/ the facemask blacked out, and a timed physical agility course. After scores from the written and physical agility tests are compiled, the top 10 applicants will go before an interview board consisting of the 3 Shift Captains. After the scores from all 3 portions of the testing process are averaged, an active hire roster is created. This new hire roster will be valid for a period of no more than 1 year.
   If and when an entry level position becomes available, the top 3 candidates will be called back for a second interview, conducted by the Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief. After this interview, a thorough background check will be conducted, including phone calls to listed references and former employers. If you are chosen for employment, you will be given a drug test, psychological evaluation and physical assessment to ensure that you are capable of performing the duties of the job.
   All interested candidates must be at least 21 years of age, must possess a High School Diploma, a valid Tennessee Drivers License and have no prior felony convictions. If you meet these requirements, you may pick obtain an application upstairs of City Hall at the Human Resources Office and return to said office.
   Applications will not be held year around, nor will they carry over to the following year. We will post the open application period in the Elizabethton Star, on Social Media and on this website for 2 consecutive weeks. This is the only time that applications will accepted.
