LaPorte elected to the council in November 2004.

Laporte is President and full owner since 1989 of LaPorte Construction, Inc. He is a State Licensed General Constractor involved in commercial and residential construction.

LaPorte is a current member of the City of Elizabethton's Construction Board of Adjustment and Appeals, and a member of the Elizabethton/Carter Chamber of Commerce since 1988. He was Building Committee Chairman in 1988 with Habitat for Humanity, a Construction Supervisor for 2 homes in Elizabethton, and Volunteer Worker for 3 other homes in Elizabethton.

LaPorte was President of Johnson City Homebuilder Association, Inc in 1996 and Builder of the Year in 1997. He was also President of the Elizabethton Soccer Association for the 2002 and 2003 terms with 400 players .
